About Us

See our latest press release!

Peninsula Symphonic Winds (PSW) was established in 1996 as an independent, nonprofit educational association. The ensemble is composed of community members who are semi-professional or seasoned amateur musicians. Led by our Music Director Mr. Justin Raines and Associate Music Director Janet Song Kim, we perform a wide variety of music from the concert band and symphonic repertoire.

The Salvation Army’s Torrance Chapel, located at 4223 Emerald Street in Torrance, is our concert home. The facility is acoustically engineered for musical performances and offers comfortable seating for audience members.

The mission of the Peninsula Symphonic Winds is to provide an opportunity for instrumental musicians to maintain and enhance their musical skills, to prepare and perform the traditional and modern concert band repertoire, to offer stimulating concerts to the public, and to provide a venue for composers of new works for concert band.

We gratefully acknowledge the support of Harbor College, which continues to provide the use of its facilities for rehearsals.

We invite you to browse our website to learn more about us, including opportunities for you to support the Peninsula Symphonic Winds. If you are a wind or percussion instrumentalist, come to a practice at Harbor College some Wednesday evening and see what you think. And if you enjoy fine band music played well, come to a concert! We look forward to meeting you there.

Thank you for visiting our website.

PSW is affiliated with the Association of Concert Bands, a national organization for bands across America.

Support

For more than 150 years, audiences in our country have enjoyed concert band music played in their communities by local residents. The Peninsula Symphonic Winds continues that tradition. As with any such organization, the PSW is dependent both on local musicians volunteering their time and on the generosity of community members who provide the financial support required to buy music, secure concert venues, hire guest artists, and to cover other necessary expenses. At present, over 80 percent of our financial support comes from PSW musicians and supporters.

If you want to renew your support or add your name as a supporter of the PSW, we accept donations via Zelle to the email address Info@pswinds.org. Please follow these steps to donate to our organization:

New Members

We rehearse once a week and perform four to five concerts yearly in Torrance and Palos Verdes. New players of almost any band instrument from bassoon to bells are welcome. Some of our members also play in other groups, and some enjoy practicing their skills with their second or third instrument. Skill levels range from moderate to excellent. If you enjoy rehearsing and performing a variety of concert band music in a relaxed community atmosphere, we’d like to hear from you.

Guests and prospective players are welcome anytime to come and listen, or to bring an instrument and rehearse with us. Rehearsals are held from 7:30pm to 10:00pm, Wednesday nights at Los Angeles Harbor College. Harbor College (1111 Figueroa Place, Wilmington, CA 90744) is accessible from the southbound Harbor Freeway at the Anaheim Street exit. Turn north on Figueroa Place to West ‘L’ Street and turn west. From Anaheim Street, turn north at Figueroa Place. Enter the parking area across from the Music Building on ‘L’ Street. The rehearsal is in Room 107 in the Music Building.
